Using the “safely remove hardware” function. Is it necessary if…?
Is using the function necessary if you were to wait until the usb memory device (flash drive, HD, MP3 player, etc.) was idling or otherwise not transferring data before removing the device?
Isn’t the whole point of the function is to prevent the user from removing the device before it was done transferring data to prevent file/program corruption/deletion? If not, what is the purpose of this function?
Yes, you are correct in your assumption.
The function’s purpose is basically to cut down on help & support e-mails from idiots who jerk their devices out of the computer when they’re not supposed to, and find out later that the content of their files are either missing or garbled.
However, in some operating systems, such as a couple Linux distributions, the changes to your disk are not written immediately, but instead are made when you finally eject your device. In this case, simply pulling out your device will mean that nothing has been changed. This is not the case with Microsoft Windows, though.
