The Evolution Of Portable Media
The evolution of portable media devices has been an intense one in the last 20 years. It seems like just yesterday that Sony’s Walkman was the most advanced way to take your music with you. Shortly after came the Discman which allowed the user to take their CDs with them wherever they went, offering better sound quality than the portable cassette player. The MiniDisc was a less cumbersome device that allowed the user to listen to CD quality audio in a smaller format, but was a technology that quickly became obsolete with the invention of the digital media player. Apple was the first company to release the best selling digital media player the iPod. The advance in high speed internet caters to these modern digital media players.
The iPod allows music lovers to download their favorite mp3 files to the player and carry the digital music around wherever they go. It is a great device for commuters who take public transportation to work or someone doing their daily exercise routine. High speed broadband internet is an integral part of using the iPod. The user needs a high speed connection to download the media that they wish to add to the library on their iPod. After the files have finished downloading they can quickly transfer them to the device from the computer using a USB cable. With a broadband internet connection an iPod owner can have tons of new music to enjoy on their portable media device.
The first generation iPod was unveiled in 2001. It was smaller than a Walkman portable cassette player and could hold more than 50 hours of music when filled to the maximum capacity. The iPod was only compatible with Apple computers leaving an open market for developers to imitate the product and market it to Windows users. Apple quickly changed tactics and in the next generations of the iPod they would create a product for both Windows and Macintosh users, greatly increasing the customer base.
Many other companies tried to imitate the iPod but none have been very successful in stealing customers from apple. Figures indicate that there have been more than 240,000,000 iPods sold since the device was first released. There have been six different generations of the classic iPod model, with the latest offering up to 160 gigabytes in storage space. The devices have evolved to not only portable music players, but some models can store all types of digital files, including videos and pictures.
The most recent line of the iPod features a touch screen that offers a very large picture. This is a great feature that offers the user a much bigger screen making it much easier for the owners to watch movies and television programs. In addition to the large screen, iPod Touch has a wireless network adapter that allows the owner to connect to Wi-Fi networks where they are available.
Apples, iTunes store offers users a place to purchase all types of media including music, television, and movies. Many of the files are very large and cannot be downloaded without an adequate internet connection. Broadband satellite internet providers offer iPod owners a trustworthy high speed internet service so they can download and synchronize the latest movies to their IPod in a short amount of time. A trusty broadband internet connection is essential to making the most out of your portable media device.
