Guide to cheap MP3 players
In my opinion an excellent type of Mp3 player would be the Apple Ipod. Ipods have become very popular over the last couple of years. Its not just your normal Mp3 player, it is packed with bonus features such as Pictures, a personal calendar, games, a personal contact book, and now even videos.
When looking for an inexpensive mp3 player, there are 5 main things to consider.
1. Price
2. Features
3. Storage Size
4. Ease of use
5. Available peripherals
There are some mp3/mp4 players out there that are so cheap; they just seem too good to be true. While, there are several scammers out there, these S1 players seem to be what they are advertised to be. The players are voice recorders, they have audio and video playback and FM tuners, it even has eBook and contacts list support, and some come with games.
These players are called S1 mp3 players. (The ones with video are S1 mp4 players.) They are cheap devices are made in China or Korea. There are user’s lists and forums – one such is s1mp3.org. The controls are kludgey. And some of them are rife with copyright and patent violations. (One that I ordered came in a box with mp3 / mp4 written with an upside W from the Sony Walkman logo, and every page of the horribly translated manual has the Apple logo on it.)
Some believe that the reason these players are so cheap, is due to their exaggerated or completely lied about storage capacities. The reason for the confusion is that some of these players use archival technology on their drives. This means while it may be able to store up to 4 GB of data on the player – only the first GB will be playable.
There is no real way to organize the music. You can’t sort or shuffle on the device at all. The mp3s play in alphabetical order within the folders. Speaking of folders – you can only have 99 files in a given folder. It just won’t recognize file # 100 or higher. And you can only have folders one deep (so music1/ and music2/ not music1/a/ music1/b/ – just top level folders). I’m not sure, but I’d guess you can only have 99 folders – so 99 * 99 (9801) is your absolute limit of number of files.
Also, you don’t load it through iTunes. You just use it like a drive. Some come with software that allows interfacing with Windows Media Player, but that’s only on Windows.
The point is – if you are willing to put up with some frustration and limitations – it’s a good deal. If you just want a super easy to use player without the bells and whistles, or if money isn’t important, get something like an iPod Touch or Zune.
