reduce mp3 size audacity

By admin

How do I reduce the file size when saving an mp3 in Audacity?

I import a recorded mp3 file of about 6,000mb, edit by deleting sections etc but when I export as an mp3 or wave file, the end up over 55,000mb.
How do I save as mp3 and keep the file size smaller?
Thanks

You mean a 6Mb file ends up as a 55Mb file.
The only way it would do this is saving as a wav file.
Sounds like you need the Lame encoder if you export as mp3 and it’s defaulting to wav.

The bitrate for mp3 encoding needs to be set via file / preferences / file formats which becomes the default setting when exporting to mp3.
If you want to try various bitrates it has to be re-set each time.
A bitrate of 128 kbps is nominally accepted as a good compromise between file size and quality.

(6,000 Mb = 6 gigabytes. 55,000 Mb = 55 gigabytes.)
