Where can i get an external hard drive case in USB1 – not 2.0?
I have a lovely new Philips dvd player (DVP 5960) with a USB socket on the front. I can use my card reader, memory stick and mp3 payer to look at downloaded videos and mp3′s. Ideally I can plug in an external hard drive and use it as a base for a home entertainment system. BUT its only compatible with USB 1! All hard drive cases I see are USB 2.0 – it will definitely not touch them! Has anyone any clue where I can get one??
The manual specifically says “…the USB port only supports the USB 1.1.. if a non supported USB device is plugged in, the player will display ‘not supported device’ “.
USB 2.0 devices are designed to be backwards compatible with USB 1.0 and 1.1 ports, so unless it specifically says on the box that it won’t work with USB 2.0 then you should have no problems. Every USB 2.0 port comes with three chips installed on it – one for USB 2.0, one for USB 1.1, and one for USB 1.0. You’re going to have a hard time finding an external hard drive using a USB 1.0/1.1 connection if it turns out you need one, but I can’t imagine why any manufacturer would put out a product that’s only compatible with obsolete technology (or, for that matter, how they could have designed it that it wouldn’t work with a USB 2.0 port).
