nero mp3 encoder

Which format uses less battery life? AAC, WMA, MP3?

I would like to know which format uses less battery life on a Microsoft Zune. Ideally, AAC (encoded by Nero), MP3 (encoded by LAME), and WMA (encoded by Media Encoder) would have to be 320 kbps, meaning that they would have to be on their highest setting. My question is a result of finding out that WMA PRO 10 and WMA Lossless drain my battery pretty bad (which isn’t the best battery life in the first case).

If you’ve compared AAC and MP3 on you IPOD and know which format consumes less power, please also feel free to answer!

And if you can answer this question as well, I can almost guarantee you ten points: Which format is better sound-quality-wise? I like mp3 because of its universality (anything plays it), though not so much the sound quality. My Zune plays WMA, which I think sounds better, and AAC, which also sounds as good. My choice, I think will be determined by which format uses less power.

To be honest none of the formats are going to affect battery life that much if they are encoded at the same bitrate. The battle over whether AAC is better the MP3 sound wise rages on but I will say what I always say: on an ipod which has only decent sound quality at best there isnt going to be much of a difference. Just use the highest bitrate you can in whatever format is the most convenient to use. The differences are negligible.

Update 0.3 (upcoming macbook refresh, etc.)
