Is it possible to use a cd or MP3 to break a song down to it’s component tracks?
This is not the same question as all the people who have asked how to break for instance a 60 minute compilation into individual songs.
I’m talking about individual component tracks on one song (anyone with studio knowledge/experience should know what I’m referring to). I used to have a cd player with broken cd-out sockets (to plug into my hi-fi’s amp) and by plugging in the cable a certain way I could play cd’s and hear cd’s and on each song certain tracks would be missing. It was great to hear songs in this way, almost as remixes. That got me thinking I’d like to do something similar, not necessarily for sampling or anything like that, just to hear songs in a new way a little bit.
I figure these days there must be some software available (FREEWARE PLEASE!!!) where something basic like this can be done. I don’t really want to spend £300 on something mega-complicated, I just want a little fun and a little bit of playing around with songs. Nothing too technical please!
You need some dedicated software, and I’ve never found a free version. My brother is going to school to be an Audio Tech and the software to do what you are talking about is VERY expensive, and doesn’t always work anyway.
They work on frequencies: there are pre-programmed filters (life for “vocals”) that have a set threshold for the frequency filter. They you get either the original track minus vocals or just the vocal track alone.
The program my Brother’s school uses is about $2500 for the whole suite (including the Track Split tool – you can’t buy that alone) and the computers they are using are SICK! Mostly Mac Pros with either two or four 3.0GHz Intel Duo Core processors (yea – 4 Duo Cores? I know!)
I did some research on this, because I like making remixes – I find acoustic track and then use GarageBand to add loops, record extra tracks, and tweak the song all around. I was looking for something like what you are describing, but was unable to find something for the casual user – it’s all ProTools.
