How do I turn my home pc to a file server that anybody can access via the internet?
I am trying to set it up as a file host. It works fine over the LAN but I want to access it from other peoples house’s and stream my mp3′s from it.
You are actually asking 2 different questions here. To turn your PC into a file server for anyone to access requires the following. You need to establish a dns entry for your home systems, usually pointing to your router. Then you need to establish the link form the router to your PC that is going to be the file server such that the dns name points to the file server. you need install IIS or similar software on you PC to share out the directories you want. Now your files will be accessible by anyone, although why you want that for a home PC I am not sure.
f you simply want to access your files from anywhere eon the Internet you can usually establish a VPN on your router and PC. This will then allow you to access your PC from anywhere on the Internet. If you don’t want to deal with changing IP addresses you can also establish DDNS on your router, if it supports it.
