Plug mp3 player directly into car audio?
I took the Sony Radio/CD unit out of my car as it was not working. I am trying to plug my mp3 player directly into the rca (Rockford Fosgate Signal Cable) cable in the car (using rca to 1/8 adapter plug). However, when I turned the player on, there was no sound? I was wondering if I’m doing something wrong?
Do I need an adapter? I would prefer not to buy a new stereo deck as my mp3 player also has built-in radio!
I don’t think I have a separate amp in the vehicle as I believe the speakers were powered by the stereo unit. The unit that was in the vehicle was a: Sony CDX-M600 Head Unit.
You will have to pick up an amplifier to power your full range speakers (as I am assuming your RCA cables were running a seperate sub amp that you added?) You will then need to use 2 pairs of Y adaptors to run all the rca leads parallel to your MP3 player. One of the issues you are going to face is that when you split the small amount of power being put out by your player between 3 different low level cables, you are going to have your MP3 player blasting, and your gain on your amps turned up pretty high, just to get a descent volume out of your system, and will probably sound pretty crappy, since you will have very little volume control, and extremely limited EQ options (depending on your MP3 player) What’s worse is that if you decide to charge your player while you are trying to play it, you will most likely have alternator whine which will come through your system as an annoying squilling sound.
Your best bet is to just replace your stereo and get on with your life. You can pick one up from BestBuy for $70 and plug your MP3 player right into it. It’s much cheaper than buying a 4 channel amp, the cables to go with it, and then rewiring your entire vehicle. :-/
