Yes, the artwork for iTunes purchased files is embedded in the AAC (not mp3) file.
If you add artwork to your own files using iTunes to get the artwork, it is not embedded in the file.
To embed the artwork into the file, get info on the song in iTunes, click the Artwork tab and then add the artwork.
