Why are USB ports sometimes not interchangeable?
Hi everyone,
I have lots of USB devices plugged into my (Windows OS) laptop (external hard drive, PDA docking station, MP3 player etc), but whenever I move the laptop around the house and disconnect the plugs, if I don’t put the devices back in the same USB ports as before they have to install drivers all over again, or they just don’t want to work.
Just now I had my MP3 player plugged into a port in the back of the laptop, and I couldn’t find the device in the My Computer folder. I moved it to another free port, and the computer found it instantly and asked me if I wanted to sync my music.
Why do USB ports not share the same drivers? They look the same but they don’t work the same as each other. I’ve also had this issue with an external docking station to convert serial ports to USB to work on the laptop. It’s very frustrating when you want to do something and the computer won’t do you any favours.

This is not a driver issue.
When you install a usb device it is set up on the particular port into which you plugged it. It must work this way because the computer has to know which device is plugged into which port. If you plug a device into a different port the computer doesn’t recognize it. At that point you can either plug it into the port into which it was installed, or reinstall it for the new port.
