will 5V 1.0 A work with 5V 1.2 A?
I just got a GPS and it only came with a car adapter to charge it, but I have a USB cable that fits the plug and a wall charger for my MP3 player that uses the USB cable. The car charger output is 5V 1.2 A and the output of the wall adapter is 5V 1.0 A, will I be able to use the wall charger without doing harm to my GPS?
It probably won’t hurt anything. However, battery chargers and power supplies are not the same. Most of these portable devices have the battery charging circuit built in and the adapter device is only a basic power supply. In that case you’ll be fine. But, the 200ma less could be an issue. It’s possible it will not supply enough charging current to properly charge the battery. It’s close, so it should work alright. If it enters the charging process it may take a little longer to charge due to the reduced current.
The other issue is the connection. Just because the cable has connectors on it that match doesn’t mean it is wired the same way. Without knowing for certain which pins are used for what function you could be in trouble. If the device uses standard USB wiring and the connecting is intended for functionality with USB it should be wired in a way that no harm would be done.
