mp3 bitrate quality tests

AAC better than MP3 @ 320 kbps?

I have heard both objective and subjective tests show that AAC compression produces better quality recordings at comparable bitrates than MP3. When the bitrate is 128 kbps, or 192 people say AAC is better.

At 320 kbps, is there a difference though since this is the maximum bitrate for both compression formats? And they are pushing as much detail as possible at this point.
I am am audiophile who owns $250 Klipsch IEMs, headphone amps, and when I had my hearing tested for medical reasons my sensitivity to frequencies was far above average baselines.

So every little difference counts! I would use FLAC, but my portable player doesn’t support Rock BOX hack, and WAV files are too large. So this is for portable use.

you’re kinda right : AAC quality is usually better than MP3 quality and “more so at lower bit-rates”… so at 320 kbps the difference should be almost intangible.

I’d say at 320 kbps the quality is the same for 95% of the listeners, though technically, AAC is still better (more efficient also)… that is if we’re using a decent encoder obviously.
