mp3 bitrate conversion
What’s the best way to rip CDs?

Hey all…

I’m pretty familiar with the CD ripping process, and understand file conversion, various encoders, what bitrates are, and so forth.

I’d really like to hear your experiences or suggestions, however.

I have a bunch of CDs I’d like to rip so I can put them on my Zune. I’m wondering a few things:

1) Do you prefer WMA or MP3? Why?

2) What bitrate do you prefer?

3) What software do you use to rip? My options specifically are Windows Media Player and the Zune software, but I have also used third-party apps like CDex, that use CDDB to get the CD info.

Thanks!

1) I prefer MP3s. I find that they have more potential for better sound quality, and the format is better supported.

2) It depends. 320kbps is my favourite since it’s probably the closest you’ll get to lossless, but it also makes for large file sizes– I’ll use it for albums that I’m particularly concerned with preserving as much audio quality as possible. Using VBR (variable bitrate) is another good option, as it uses the ideal bitrate for each individual song you’re converting, but it can make for fairly large file sizes as well (often ranges in the 200s, though it depends).

The best for size and quality in my eyes is 192kbps. I can deal with 128kbps, but it’s not really ideal.

3) Lately I’ve just been using iTunes and converting to VBR MP3s, but that’s mostly out of convenience since it’s there and I’m using it to organize my music already. It does the job well enough.

Another I use that is a solid program is Exact Audio Copy (EAC: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/). Lot of options to specify how you want to convert, and very good error correction. It makes use of CDDB as well.
