I used Razorlame, a frontend for LAME. LAME by itself is command-line which means you’d have to type commands, Razorlame provides the interface for this. It’s easy and free.

I compress my mp3s to 128kbps bitrate at 48khz sample rate for archiving. It’s small but the quality is good enough for me.
