Kanye West released his debut album in 2004 with The College Dropout. This marked the beginning of his career as a musical artist. The singer began as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records and worked on Jay-Z’s album, The Blueprint as well as singles for Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson and Ludacris.
This past spring, Kanye kicked off his Glow In The Dar Tour starting in Seattle. The tour got extended to August 2009. The singer debuted a new single, Love Lockdown, at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, which did not include rapping, marking a first for the singer. H e won two AMA awards in November of 2008 at the American Music Awards as well as Favorite Rap/Hop Album for Graduation and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Male Artist.
The artist shocked the nation with an impromptu outburst during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s speech. Swift was accepting an award for Best Female Video, when Kanye entered the stage, grabbed the microphone and told the audience that Beyonce had the number one video for Single Ladies. He was removed from the show and was criticized by many celebrities, including President Obama. Following the incident, West posted two apologies on his blog and appeared on The Jay Leno Show where he apologized verbally to Taylor Swift. He also appeared on The View to discuss the incident.
Whether controversial or not, Kanye still tops the charts and is tops in the downloadable ringtones arena. His music is popular for MP3 downloads and for ringtones on mobile phones. With ringtones being a passive marketing tool, this is great for any artist who is a ringtone today. Viral marketing at its best.
