I do not now own an MP3 player, if that is what they are called. My son has been talking to me about how?
they work. I have some questions, but first let me say that I am amused by the fact that the word SONGS is used so often. As a classical music lover, we usually do not record or listen to “songs.” Can classical music like the nine symphonies of Beethoven be “down loaded” for 99 cents each? Is there a site that specializes in classical music, instead of “songs?”
Most of the more popular download sites (ITunes, Napster etc) have a decent library of classical music.
The answer to your question is.. NO.. each Beethoven Symphony would not be .99. Each movement of that Symphony would be .99. So if you chose a symphony that had 6 movements.. it would cost you 6 downloads at .99 each. In the case of classical music, each “movement” would represent a “song”.
Check out Emusic..(http://www.emusic.com) and browse their selection.. I am not a big classical music buff.. but it seems really good..I’m there because their jazz selection is awesome, and they do a subscription thing.. 40 downloads per month for $9.99.. so its quite a bit cheaper, if your downloading a lot of stuff like you would in classical.
However, this site would not work well for you son, who probably wants more pop/modern/rap type music… their selection is not good on this stuff… but for us “older” people that are more into specialized type stuff.. emusic is awesome. But there are plenty of other sources for downloading pop music..
To clear a couple other things up for you…
An “mp3″ player, is just like your old walkman.. except instead of playing tapes or CD’s, it plays single digital computer audio files. These audio files can be saved in a number of file formats.. the most popular being .mp3 (the 3 digit computer extension on the end of the file name) There are other audio file formats.. ..wma, .wav etc. .mp3 is just a popular one, because of the size and quality it handles. IPOD/ I-Tunes – Apple computers player and service
(which really owns most of the consumer market for this stuff)uses a proprietary format other than .mp3.. with encryption to help with the audio piracy issues.. but thats a much lengthier story, than I going to cover here, on the difference between all these other players.
So basically an Mp3 player, stores 100′s to 1000′s of these “song files”.. so that you can hold practically 100′s of CD’s worth of music on your player and have access to it.. depending on what size storage player you get.. and they come in all sizes from 2GB’s of storage to 80GB’s.. which would hold like 5,000 albums or something.. but that size is mainly now for video files.. which you can do the same thing.. and watch entire movies on the video versions of these players.
In addition to downloading these files.. you can take your current music CD’s.. and “rip” them.. which means converting them from your CD to individual mp3 files that go on your player.. so you can put your whole CD collection on your player. I have a couple hundred CD’s on my player.. 50% are ripped CD’s.. 50% downloaded stuff
Hope this helps..
