To store my album art in MP3 tags or the album directory, that is the question.?
My album art varies from 20K to 100K. If I store it in my MP3 I add 100K+ to 1MB+ to the size of my album. Does it really matter that much? Are there other disadvantages to storing it in my MP3s?
The big question is what is the value to you to have the album art stored with the MP3s.
If you have an portable MP3 player that will display the album art while you are listening to the songs, I guess that could be an advantage. Of course, any time the display light is turned on, that drains the batteries and significantly reduces playing time.
Also, as you have noted, this will increase file size. At 192kbps, a typical song will take about 5.5MB. A 1MB increase would kick this up to 6.5MB. Figure a 10% – 20% reduction in the number of songs you can squeeze on to a player.
Again, you should check with your portable player. I don’t think this kind of meta information should cause a problem on a portable player, but you never know — some players may not like it. I’ve never tried it myself.
