MP3 128kbps versus 192kbps?
A friend of mine insists it’s impossible to tell the difference between an mp3 file @ 128 kbps compared to 192 kbps with the naked ear. However I can tell the difference, to me 128 sounds kinda scratchy and low even though he insists I’m lying, am I the only person who can tell the difference?
It varies from person to person, and sometimes between what makes up the song. That’s, of course, presuming the limiting factor isn’t some really cheap equipment.
I generally can’t tell much between 128 and 192, although I’m using 192 to be on the safe side. A few people think 320 still sounds horrible, and some can’t figure out what was so wrong with 64. Mp3 is a lossy format, and it’s all a matter of how much compression you can personally not notice.
Basically, you just need to figure out what YOU like the sound of and then go with it. If 192′s good, use it. Your friend who can’t tell the difference between 128 and 192 can keep using 128 and just gets to put more songs on his players.
