Removable drive problems with Vista?
Hi,
I cannot get removable drives to appear and work with Windows Vista. Everytime I plug something in Vista recognises a new device and tries to install it (and fails because there are no drivers). I have triend with numerous USB Flash drives and my latest problem is an Archos removable hard drive and MP3 player.
Anyone know what the problem might be? I’ve tried plugging into all the USB posts and all UBS ports are working correctly.

(ANS) YES! I’ve had exactly this kind of problem myself but with a Dane Electric 2GB USB memory stick which works perfectly on my main windows XP Pro DELL workstation but wont work at all on my older XP laptop.
No.1 In your case I would suggest that possibly its your hardware thats NOT yet fully Windows Vista compatible.
No.2 Many USB devices are PnP and thus should already have generic Vista drivers that should work without extra drivers being installed. Well as you can see thats the theory anyway but this doesn’t solve the problem.
**Sadly in my case I haven’t yet pin pointed the real or root cause of this problem, which is very annoying. The closest I have come is that windows on my old laptop keeps saying that my computer is missing a fast USB host controller and that might also be the cause of your problems too? but I cannot guarantee this though.
**make sure your machine is using USB version 2.0 i.e. higher speed USB ports or USB slots.
**Check to see if the makers of your external devices have newer updated drivers, that is drivers specifically written for Vista. Check on the makers website, often found under the support section or support pages.
**Device drivers remain one of the BIGGEST technical problems with Windows Vista, as many software & hardware companies are still playing catch up in terms of writing newer drivers. NOTE: some drivers will never get updated to Vista especially on older hardware.
