What does this mean? I am confused (mp3)?
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a popular digital audio encoding and lossy compression format, designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent audio, yet still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio to most listeners. It was invented by a team of German engineers who worked in the framework of the EUREKA 147 DAB digital radio research program, and it became an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.
MP3 is simply a file format to store audio. When they say “lossy”, it means that when an MP3 is created some of the sound is thrown away so they can make the file size smaller. What’s thrown away is really high and really low frequencies so it doesn’t really impact what the song sounds like.
The whole idea is to make the song sound as close to the original as possible, but reduce the size of the file to 1/10th or less of the size of the original CD track.
