MP3 songs – cannot hear lyrics??

My daughter got a small MP3 player for christmas. She has downloaded a few songs off the net & copied them via USB to her player. Problem: All song words / singing cant be heard, or only softly like thro a tunnel. the actuall music is perfect….whats the problem???
The head phones probably don’t work and is the mp3 fully charged? My sister has an i pod and that happened to her because her headphones where broken.
