How do I calculate BPM data for a song with variable BPM?
I used a BPM analyzer, it said 169.88, but in testing with that value, the end of the mp3 was off-sync.
So I cut the song in half. The first half if 169.88, the second half is 169.94.
However, I just arbitrarily chose the midpoint. I don’t have a clue where the BPM changes, or how many times.
How could I do this, to have BPM data as accurate as possible?
Depends on the type of song actually.
If it is a computer generated drumbeat, your best bet is actually to use the BPM analyser as a ‘guess’ and try by hand from there. (Trial from error with minor changes in value)
If it is a drum machine in the song in question, you would almost certainly find that the actual speed is 170BPM (Or possibly 167.5) throughout.
Beat detection is extremely difficult, and software is generally not that good at it – a sudden bass note with high attack and fade can easily be mistaken for a drum kick, as they would produce a similar signature.
If it is a human drummer however, its pretty much impossible – as human timing isn’t consistent enough to do that.
Hope that helps.
