press and hold the center button and the menu button untill it restarts.
You said its a classic. so if its stuck on the apple logo you may have dropped it and if thats the case then you killed the Hdd inside of the ipod and can be repaired but you have to know how to open it up. If you havent dropped it then the ipod has either lost connection with or has shourted the Hdd and it still needs replaced. You can buy the specific gen Hdd for you ipod on ebay warning it will not be cheap
