Sound “shaping” for MP3 car audio?
’96 Chevy Monte Carlo, Alpine CDE-9845 head unit, two Pioneer 5.5″ round speakers door mounted, two Pioneer 6×9″ speakers on rear deck, Profile HA-700 amp, Rockford-Fosgate Phase2 12″ subwoofer in ported box.
I currently use WinAmp and an MP3 plugin to reencode MP3 music according to some presets in a music add-on (DFX). I can vary the bass, treble, and other aspects of the sound.
Usually this works pretty well, but I’m wondering if I could profile my car’s optimal sound environment, in other words figure out what ranges of frequencies sound best, so that I can apply this to the MP3 and if possible modify some of their frequencies so they fall in these preferred ranges.
Or to put it another way.. for tracks which have sounds that resonate particularly well, I want to make it so they’re closer to the ideal frequency for my car (almost “sharpen” them).
Maybe there’s a way to do this, or maybe I just need a better re-encoding tool with a wider array of options?
So you want to record mp3′s and affect the tones on the recording so they sound best in your car? That is what I got from your question. If so, then you’d need a spectrum analyzer to “listen to the car and see where the dips and peaks are, then compensate for this in your recordings.
This is basically what Bose does when it makes a system for a car.
This is what people are doing with an equalizer. They usually boost the lower and higher bands so the EQ is in a bowl shape. The reason this works is that the human ear hears midrange frequencies more than low bass and high frequencies. So we want to boost the bass and highs and leave the midrange down. We are basically flipping the hearing curve over with the EQ.
